Maine Premier Soccer will field
a club first team, known as Portland
Phoenix, in the
USL Super-20 League in 2009 with
a view to enter the prestigious PDL
in 2010. The PDL is highly regarded
as the most competitive amateur
league and will draw some of the
nation's finest collegiate talent
for soccer competition in Maine.
"I am very excited about the launch
of
Maine Premier Soccer and the
arrival of a new sports team for the
Maine community to back," said MPS
General Manager
Paul Baber. "We look forward to
offering Maine's best local and
collegiate players a place to play
during the summer months."
In addition to the Portland Phoenix
first team squad, MPS will introduce
a vertically integrated approach to
youth soccer development in the
state. The club will introduce
U13-U17 boy's and girl's teams, also
known as Portland Phoenix, that will
participate in the
USL Super Y-League. These teams
will be non exclusive and will
complement existing club teams by
providing spring and summer play for
the higher level soccer athletes
The club will cater for U8 through U12
players with a School of
Excellence program and also
offer elite level camp and
clinic training for players of
all ages.
"MPS will cater not only for
soccer fans in the state, but
also aspiring young players,"
said Baber. "We look forward to
working with town programs and
existing soccer clubs for the
betterment of youth soccer in
Maine."
