Men's College Soccer

September 24, 2008

STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph's College men’s soccer goalkeeper Will Pike ‘10 (Gorham, ME) received regional recognition on Tuesday, as he was named the ECAC DIII New England Defensive Player of the Week. Pike was honored by the GNAC on Monday as the conference Goalkeeper of the Week.

In 290 minutes of match play during the September 15th-21st reporting period, Pike made 23 saves and allowed only two goals to help the Monks post a 2-0-1 record in three matches. The junior recorded his second shutout of the season in a win over Daniel Webster College on September 18th and registered 12 saves in a 1-1 tie with regionally-ranked Norwich University on September 20th.

On September 23rd Pike recorded his third shutout of the year and made eight saves in a 2-0 victory over in-state rival University of Maine at Farmington, the programs first win over the Beavers in the 19-year history of the match-up.

Pike has been spectacular in net so far this season for the Monks with 55 saves, a 1.07 goals against average and an .859 save percentage. The junior keeper has made 44 saves and allowed just three goals in his last 579 minutes of play.

Pike and the Monks (3-3-2, 0-1-1 GNAC) return to the pitch on Saturday, September 27th when they play host to GNAC rival Suffolk University at 3:30 PM.

The ECAC is the nation's largest athletic and the only multi-divisional conference in the country with 321 Divisions I, II, and III colleges and universities.  The ECAC stretches from Maine to North Carolina and westerly to Illinois. Established in 1938, the ECAC, a non-profit service organization, sponsors more than 100 championships in 37 men's and women's sports and assigns more than 4,400 officials in 12 sports.  The ECAC also administers eight affiliate sports organizations and six playing leagues, and through the public relations arm of the conference, more than 2,500 student-athletes in 23 sports are recognized annually.
