Bates routs Southern Maine in field hockey, 8-1

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College field hockey team built a 5-0 halftime lead and extended it to 7-0 en route to an 8-1 defeat of non-conference, in-state rival Southern Maine on Wednesday at Campus Avenue Field.

Eight different players scored for Bates, which raised its overall record to 5-6 while the visiting Huskies fell to 7-7. It was the Bobcats' fifth straight win over the Huskies.

Bates junior back Samantha Rothkopf (Chicago, Ill.) scored on a penalty corner in the sixth minute of the game to open up the scoring, the first of four goals Bates would score on penalty corners. It was the first goal of the season for Rothkopf, who later added an assist. Junior Morgan Maciewicz (Marblehead, Mass.) also recorded one goal and one assist for Bates, while first-year Kelly McManus (Campton, N.H.) tallied a career-high three assists in the game.

Bates sophomore Stephanie Cabot (Dover, Mass.) added her third goal this season three minutes later to make it 2-0, and less than two minutes after that, in the game's 11th minute, senior Rachel Greenwood's (Williamstown, Mass.) fifth goal of the year made it 3-0. Also tallying goals for Bates were sophomore Sema Kazarian (Providence, R.I.), with her team-high seventh goal; senior Emily Sampson (Plymouth, N.H.) with her fourth, and first-years Lyndsay Beaton (West Newbury, Mass.) and Jenna Dannis (Milford, N.H.), both with their first collegiate goals.

Southern Maine junior Caitlin Albert (Scarborough, Maine) scored her seventh goal of the season on a penalty corner to make it 7-1 in the 43rd minute.

Southern Maine junior goalkeeper Allison Hill (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) made 10 saves for the Huskies, while junior Helena Turner (Manchester, Mass.) made three saves in her first start of the season for the Bobcats.

Bates visits NESCAC opponent Middlebury on Saturday at 11 a.m. Southern Maine will play at UMass-Dartmouth Saturday at 3:30.
