College Golf

September 22, 2008

WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Bates College golf team finished third out of six teams Sunday at the Colby Classic, with a modified-system score of 229, just two strokes behind runner-up Bowdoin. Husson won the tournament with a score of 217.

Teams were grouped into three pairs who played six holes of best ball, six holes of scramble format and six holes of alternate play. Partners stayed the same throughout the play.

Bates' duos of sophomore Mike Kelen (Baltimore, Md.) and John Canney (North Clarendon, Vt.), first-year Lee Smith (Lexington, Mass.) and senior Mark DelGiudice (Bedford, N.H.) and seniors Jeremy Rogalski (West Springfield, Mass.) and Tom Bowden (Falmouth, Maine) assembled respective scores of 76, 76 and 77.

The golf team is next in action on the women's side, with Bates playing host to University of Maine at Farmington in a head-to-head match at Martindale Country Club in Auburn on Sept. 25, starting at 11 a.m. That will be followed by the NESCAC Championship Sept. 30 at Middlebury.
