HADLEY, Mass. -- Bates College
senior Clark Winchell was named to the NESCAC Men's Soccer
All-Conference Second Team, the New England Small College
Athletic Conference announced on Thursday.
It is the first all-conference
honor for Winchell (Waltham, Mass./Rivers School), a
four-year starting defender for the Bobcats and a team
co-captain. At center back, the 6-foot, 185-pound Winchell
led a solid Bates defense in 2008 that allowed 1.33 goals
per game, seventh best in the conference -- a number that
drops to just 1.08 if one takes out the team's one lopsided
loss, a 6-1 decision against Amherst.
Winchell is described by head
coach George Purgavie as "consistent, strong and intense,"
on the pitch. He is Bates' first All-NESCAC back since Eben
Sypitkowski '05 in 2004.
Winchell and the Bobcats
finished the year at 9-6 overall and 4-5 in conference play.
They earned the fifth seed in the NESCAC Championship, where
they lost to Williams in the conference quarterfinals.
