Bates' Rupasinghe wins singles flight at Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- Senior Ben Stein made the finals of the
Singles A Flight and junior Amrit Rupasinghe captured the
title in the Singles B Flight on Sunday as the
Middlebury Invitational concluded.
Having advanced to the B Flight semifinals on Saturday,
Rupasinghe (Colombo, Sri Lanka) defeated Karl Furmaga 6-3,
6-4 in Sunday's semifinal, then beat Rick Devlin of
Williams, 6-0, 7-5, for the flight championship.
Stein (Pelham, N.Y.), Rupasinghe's All-American doubles
partner, defeated Conrad Olson of
Middlebury, 4-6, 6-3, 10-4 to set up a finals showdown
with
Bowdoin College's Steven Sullivan. Sullivan prevailed
for the flight crown, 6-4, 6-2.
In Saturday's action, Stein, the No. 2 seed in the Singles A
Flight, got past Taylor Borda of Ithaca, 6-3, 6-0, then
defeated Jeremy Weinberger of
Williams
6-2, 7-5, to advance to Sunday's semifinals.
Playing in the Singles B Flight, Rupasinghe defeated Greg
Katz of Vassar, 6-3, 6-2, and Josh Rifkin of Ithaca, 3-6,
6-2, 10-5, to advance to Sunday's semifinals.
