MIDDLETOWN, Conn. -- The Bates College women's cross country
team finished a close second out of eight teams Saturday at
the Wesleyan Invitational, scoring 41 points to
Connecticut
College's 35.
Wesleyan came in third with 54 points,
followed by
Endicott (135),
St. Joseph's (L.I.) (147),
Norwich (185),
SUNY Delhi (189) and
Albertus Magnus (235).
Running in her first race of
the year, junior captain Abby Samuelson (Freeport, Maine)
led four Bobcats in the top 10 over the rainy, muddy
5-kilometer course with a time of 20:09, good for fourth
place overall out of 96 competitors. Junior Esther Kendall
(Ridgeway, Ontario) placed seventh in 20:20, followed by
junior Katie Bash (Wallingford, Pa.) in eighth at 20:34 and
sophomore Alex Alberto (Concord, Mass.) in ninth at 20:35.
Rounding out
Bates' top seven
runners were sophomore Chloe Bourne (Litchfield, Conn.) in
13th place with a time of 20:44, sophomore Liz Rowley
(Evanston, Ill.) in 15th at 20:55 and senior captain Allie
Goldstein (Needham, Mass.) in 17th at 21:02.
"We were more aggressive today
versus our first meet [the
Tufts Invitational], and we had a
better overall team performance," said
Bates head coach Jay Hartshorn, who singled out Samuelson and Alberto for their
impressive performances.
Bates next competes at Open
New Englands on Oct. 11 at Franklin Park in Boston.
