leads Bates golf team at NESCAC Qualifier

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- The
Bates College
golf team received an outstanding first-day round of 76 from
first-year Lee Smith, leading the Bobcats to ninth place so
far at the 2008
NESCAC
Men's Golf Qualifier.
Smith (Lexington, Mass.) is
tied for seventh place out of 50 competitors at the two-day
event. The top four teams to emerge from the qualifier will
compete for the
NESCAC
Championship in the spring.
Smith has a chance to place on
the
NESCAC
All-Conference Team if he finishes among the top 10 players.
He was followed Saturday by junior Kurt Schuler (Windham,
N.H.), who shot a 78, senior Jeremy Rogalski (West
Springfield, Mass.) with an 84 and sophomore John Canney
(North Clarendon, Vt.) with an 86 for a team score of 321,
25 strokes ahead of 10th-place
Colby and two
strokes behind eighth-place Tufts.
Play resumes Sunday with 18
more holes on the par 71 Ralph Myhre Golf Course.
