Bowdoin Beats Colby to Open Season

Men's College Basketball

November 15, 2008

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College men's basketball team closed the game on a 14-2 run in a 67-60 season-opening win against Colby on Saturday evening. The Polar Bears, who got significant contributions down the stretch from senior Darian Reid-Sturgis and first-year Will Hanley, improve to 1-0. Colby falls to 0-1 this season.

A tightly-fought first half featured 10 lead changes and five tie scores. The Polar Bears were able to carry a one-point advantage into the break, 31-30, thanks to a late three-pointer by Kyle Jackson, who netted four three-pointers in the opening stanza.

Colby came out of the locker room red-hot after intermission, using an
12-2 run to take their largest lead of the game. Adam Choice sparked the run with a trio of jumpers to open the half and buried another shot from the wing to give the Mules a 42-33 lead with 16:37 to play.

Bowdoin chipped away at the lead over the next four minutes and, when Hanley connected from long-range with 12:51 left, the Polar Bears had tied the contest at 44. After a missed jumper by Colby, Hanley knocked down another jumper to give Bowdoin a slim two-point lead. Colby replied with a three-pointer Artie Cutrone, and stretched their advantage to five points, 58-53, with 5:13 to go.

Bowdoin surged over the final five minutes, thanks in great part to Reid-Sturgis, who scored six key points in the 14-2 run to close the contest. Consecutive lay-ups by the co-captain gave the Polar Bears the lead for good with 3:03 left.

Bowdoin's bench outscored Colby's 24-9, and the Polar Bear defense forced 14 Colby turnovers and collected 12 blocks as a team. Mark Phillips, whose rim-rattling dunk opened the contest, finished with a team-high 15 points. Jackson (12), Hanley (11) and Reid-Sturgis (10) also saw double-figures.

The Mules, who held a 39-27 advantage on the glass, were led by a game-high 20 points from Cutrone. Justin Sherman had 15 points while Choice posted 10.
