Bowdoin Blanks Southern Maine 3-0
Women’s College Soccer

September 24, 2008

GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore forward Rebecca Silva (St. Louis, Mo.) had a goal and an assist in the opening 12 minutes of play to lead the Bowdoin College Polar Bears to a 3-0 victory over the University of Southern Maine Huskies in a non-conference women’s soccer match Wednesday afternoon at the USM Soccer Field.

The win lifts the Polar Bears overall record to 2-1-2. The Huskies dropped their second straight match to fall to 3-3-0.

Silva one-timed a cross from the right wing by senior midfielder Emily Swaim (Wellesley, Mass.) past USM junior goalkeeper Alison Bradley (Auckland, New Zealand) 90 seconds into the match to give the Polar Bears a lead. Ten minutes later, Silva served a perfectly placed corner kick onto the head of sophomore defender Tiernan Cutler (Sacramento, Calif.) who directed the ball into the net for a 2-0 lead.

Junior Dana Riker (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) got credit for the third Bowdoin goal when she took a corner kick and the ball rolled untouched through a maze of players in the box and into the goal.
Bowdoin dominated the play throughout the match, out shooting Southern Maine 24-4 and piling up a 14-0 advantage on corner kicks.

Senior goalkeeper Kelly Thomas (West Hartford, Conn.) played the first half for Bowdoin and was credited with one save. Sophomore Kat Flaherty (Fairfield, Conn.) played the second half and did not register a save. Bradley finished the match stopping 14 shots.

Southern Maine hits the road Saturday (1:00 p.m.) traveling to Boston to play the University of Massachusetts Boston in a Little East Conference match. Bowdoin will host NESCAC rival Amherst College on Saturday (12:00 p.m.).
