ORONO, Maine – University of Maine senior defensive back
Lamir Whetstone (Trenton, N.J.) was named the CAA Football
Defensive Player of the Week on Monday for his outstanding
performance in helping lead the Black Bears to a thrilling
21-20 win at 13th-ranked Massachusetts on Saturday. It marks
the fifth weekly award for the Black Bears from the CAA this
season.
Whetstone recorded two
interceptions in the win over the Minutemen. His first pick
came in the first quarter and his second interception came
with 1:37 left in the game as UMass was trying to drive for
a game-winning score. Whetstone also added two tackles in
the contest. It marked the second time in the last three
games that Whetstone has intercepted a pair of passes in one
contest -- he also turned the trick versus Northeastern. He
is currently tied for first in the CAA with five
interceptions, and ranks fifth in the league in passes
defensed.
It marks the second time in
Whetstone’s career that he has been honored with a weekly
conference award. He was named the Atlantic 10 Special Teams
Player of the Week on Sept. 24, 2006, after he returned a
kickoff 83 yards for a touchdown in Maine’s
62-12 win over Shaw.
Joining Whetstone as Maine’s
CAA weekly award winners this season are freshman fullback
Jared Turcotte (CAA rookie, Sept. 29 & Oct. 20), senior
defensive end Jovan Belcher (CAA defensive, Oct. 13) and
freshman tailback Pushaun Brown (CAA rookie, Nov. 3).
The Black Bears return to
action this Saturday when they travel to face Rhode Island
at 12 p.m., in Meade Stadium in Kingston. Maine has won
five-straight contests and is currently tied for first place
in the CAA North Division with New Hampshire.
The Black Bears return to the
friendly confines of Alfond Stadium for the 2008 regular
season finale on Nov. 22, when they play host to the
Wildcats. Tickets still remain for that contest and can be
purchased by calling (207) 581-BEAR or toll-free
(800) 756-TEAM.
