STANDISH, ME - In a GNAC Quarterfinal matchup on Sunday
afternoon, #7 Johnson & Wales University (10-8-2, 6-4-2)
defeated #2 seed Saint Joseph's (13-5-1, 9-2-1), 3-2, in
double overtime.
JWU freshman Katlyn Gerrish
(North Stonington, CT) scored off a direct kick seven
minutes into the second OT period to clinch the GNAC playoff
victory for the Wildcats. Whitney Linindoll '11 (Paris, ME)
and Anna Willis '10 (Gorham, ME) scored the Lady Monks goals
in the loss that ends the team's bid for a GNAC title.
The Lady Monks wasted no time in the early going, netting
two goals within the first seven minutes of the game. The
first goal was scored by Linindoll, who tipped in a through
ball from Katie Jordan ‘09 (Sandwich, MA) at 3:43. The
second goal was headed in by Willis to the left corner of
the goal off a rebounded shot by Mikayla Call ’11 (Portland,
ME/McAuley).
The wildcats weren’t about to go quietly, and clawed their
way back into the game with two goals of their own, both
tallied by Samantha Reynolds ’12 (Plymouth, MA). The first
of the two was on a beautiful through pass by Kristin
Illinger ’09 (Griswold, CT), which led to a breakaway goal.
A see-saw first half left the score deadlocked 2-2 at
halftime.
The second half was quiet on the scoreboard, but each team
had their chances to score. The first opportunity came for
the Lady Monks at the 11:22 mark, when Call rifled a shot
that dinged off the right post and kicked back into the
field of play. The Wildcats nearly light the lamp when at
14:07 when Reynolds was robbed of her third goal by Lady
Monks' goalie Katye Mayo ’10 (Fairfield, ME), who made three
saves in the playoff match. This key save preserved the 2-2
score, which is where it would stay for the remainder of the
second half and first overtime.
The Lady Monks outshot the Wildcats 24-7 in the game and
kept the pressure on into the second overtime. That pressure
paid off when Jordan was awarded a penalty kick after she
was tripped in the box just 24 seconds into the second
overtime. But Wildcats keeper Kory Blythe ’11 (Fall River,
MA), who made four stops in the contest, came up with the
save and turned the Lady Monks away, empty handed.
The Lady Monks rebounded quickly and had another opportunity
to win the game 2:15 into the second OT when a ball was
crossed into the box and Jessica Needham ’11 (E.
Bridgewater, MA) belted it into the back of the net. The
goal was called back when the side judge made a
controversial offside call that kept the game, as well as
the Wildcats’ playoff hopes, alive.
After five minutes of back and forth play, a crucial
obstruction call was made in Saint Joseph’s territory.
Caitlyn Albert ’12 (Merrimack, NH) lined up for the Wildcats
and crossed the ball into the box where Gerrish headed the
ball into the back of the net 7:10 into the second OT,
sealing the victory for Johnson and Wales.
