of Maine - Farmington Basketball Rolls in Season Opener
Women's
College Basketball
November 15, 2008
FARMINGTON, Maine -- Erin
Porter (Bangor, ME) scored 21 points to lead the
University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball to
a 68-46 victory over the University of Maine at Presque
Isle in the season opener for both teams today at
Dearborn Gymnasium.
The Beavers (1-0) are
scheduled to return to action Friday when they travel to
the University of Southern Maine to take on the Huskies.
The game -- part of the USM Tip-Off Tournament -- is
slated to tip off at 8 p.m. The Owls (0-1) are scheduled
to travel to Colby College on Friday.
Following Porter, Caitlyn
Laflin (Farmingdale, ME) and Ashley Busque (Belgrade,
ME) chipped in 12 and 11 points, respectively. Laflin
was the team's leading rebounder at seven, while Amanda
Byrne (Winslow, ME) and Samantha Wiley (Lincolnville,
ME) each dished out four assists.
Erica Davis (North
Yarmouth, ME) posted a double-double with 20 points and
13 boards in the loss, while Emily Moore (Lisbon, ME)
scored 10 points.
The Beavers built a
double-digit lead early, but UMPI battled back with a
Megan Korhonen (Littleton, ME) layup with 5:23 left in
the opening half cutting the lead to 22-18. Farmington
finished the opening half with a 12-2 stretch --
highlighted by back-to-back 3-pointers by Porter and
Wiley -- to take a 34-20 command into intermission. The
Beavers outscored the visitors 21-10 over the opening
nine minutes of the second half to seal the victory.
In shaky opening-game
fashion, both teams had trouble holding onto the ball
with the Owls turning the ball over 30 times and the
Beavers' 20. Byrne finished with three steals.
