BIDDEFORD, Maine -- First-year guard
Kelley Paradis (Newport, Maine) scored a
career-high 21 points on 9-for-13 shooting to lead
the University of New England Nor'easters to an
81-65 victory over the Saint Joseph's College Monks
in college women's basketball action Wednesday
evening at the Campus Center.
Paradis tallied 12 points in the second half to help
UNE protect its 36-27 halftime lead. She buried
three 3-pointers in a span of 3:14 midway through
frame as the Nor'easters opened up their advantage.
Paradis finished with six steals, three assists and
a pair of blocks to go with her game-high 21 points.
After Paradis' three-point barrage, the Monks were
able to fight their way back, closing to within
seven (69-62) at the 5:45 mark. First-year center
Ashley Geel (St. George, Maine) knocked down a pair
of trifectas to aid the surge.
The Nor'easters responded with an 8-0 run to put the
game away. Sophomore guard
Carrie Bunnell (Barnet, Vt.) scored six of the
eight points, including four free throws.
UNE senior forward
Sara Pelkey (Barre, Vt.) tossed in a season-high
18 points on 7 of 9 accuracy from the floor. Her
fine all-around performance included eight rebounds,
three steals and two blocks.
First-year forward
Margo Russell (Madison, Maine) added 12 points
for the winners, while Bunnell ended with 11.
Senior point guard
Alli Gamache (Dudley, Mass.) contributed six
assists and four steals.
Junior guard Meghan Daigle (Grantham, N.H.)
registered team highs for the Monks with 20 points
and nine boards. Junior guard Carolyn Freeman
(Scarborough, Maine) scored 11 points.
UNE shot 51.7 percent (31 of 60) from the floor and
controlled the game inside for the second straight
night, racking up a 40-28 rebounding margin and
outscoring St. Joe's in the paint, 42-16. Both
teams battled foul issues (42 total) and tunovers
(46 combined).
The Nor'easters (4-3) have a week off before playing
a home game versus Framingham State College next
Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. St. Joe's (4-2) hosts the
Merry Monk Tournament this Friday and Saturday.
