USM Sweeps LEC Weekly Awards

Men’s College Cross Country
September 22, 2008

GORHAM, Maine -- The University of Southern Maine men’s cross country swept the Little East Conference weekly awards that were announced today by Jonathan Harper, commissioner for the conference.

For the second straight week, junior Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley) was named the Runner of the Week, and freshman Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) was tabbed as the Rookie of the Week for the second time this season.

Jasud made a strong bid to win his third consecutive race at the University of Massachusetts - Dartmouth Invitational, finishing in second place. Jasud covered the five-mile UMD course in 25 minutes, 6 seconds, just two seconds behind the race winner, Teddy Vrountas of Northeastern University.

Gomes, the LEC Rookie of the Week pick two weeks ago, had another strong outing finishing in 14th place with a time of 25:28.
Led by Jasud and Gomes, the Huskies finished sixth in the final team standings with 178 points. LEC rival Keene State College won the team title with 85 points.

After a bye week, the Huskies will return to action on October 4 when they travel to Wenham, Mass., to participate in the Pop Crowell Invitational at Gordon College.
