WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Junior Tyler Jasud (Rumford,
Maine/Mountain Valley) and freshman Alex Gomes (Peabody,
Mass.) finished one-two to pace the University of Southern
Maine men’s cross country team to a second place finish at
the 2008 New England Alliance and Little East Conference
Championships run Saturday at Stanley Park in Westfield,
Mass.
Southern Maine battled nationally-ranked Keene State College
for the team titles, but Keene State’s depth proved decisive
for a 12-point victory in the Alliance race, and an
eight-point margin in the Little East scoring.
This is the second straight
year that a USM runner has won the race. Jasud follows in
the foot steps of Nick Wheeler and Curtis Wheeler who were
co-champions last year. Jasud covered the 8,000-meter course
in a time of 25 minutes, 41.87 seconds. Gomes was less than
three seconds behind, finishing in 25:44.79.
Junior Justin Richardson
(Turner, Maine/St. Dominic) was the third USM runner to
cross the line, coming in seventh overall with a time of
26:00.48. Senior Nick Downing (Winthrop, Maine) was 14th
overall in 26:33.14, and freshman Tim Even (Stoneham,
Maine/Fryeburg Academy) was 22nd in 26:54.63. Jasud, Gomes,
Richardson and Downing all earned All-New England Alliance
honors (top 20). Jasud, Gomes and Richardson also picked up
All-LEC honors (top seven).
Keene State captured the
Alliance title with a score of 32 points followed by
Southern Maine with 44. The University of Massachusetts
Dartmouth was third with 100 points. Fitchburg State College
and host Westfield State College finished fourth and fifth,
respectively, with 129 and 149 points. Keene State edge out
Southern Maine, 27-35, in the Little East scoring with UMass
Dartmouth third with 75 points.
The New England Alliance race
includes schools from the Little East Conference (LEC) and
the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC).
Each conference also scores a conference champion from the
race.
Southern Maine will travel to Rhode Island next weekend to
participate in the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC)
Division III Championship being held at Colt State
Park in Bristol, R.I..
