GORHAM, Maine -- For the fourth time this season, the
University of Southern Maine men’s cross country team has
swept the weekly Little East Conference awards that were
announced Monday afternoon.
Junior Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley) was
named the Male Runner of the Week and freshman Alex Gomes
(Peabody, Mass.) was selected as the Male Rookie of the Week
in recognition of their outstanding performances at the NCAA
Division III New England Regional Championship meet last
Saturday. The duo had previously swept the weekly awards on
September 22, October 20 and November 3. Overall, each has
won their respective award six times this fall.
Jasud came across the finish
line in 11th place among the 331 finishers at the regional
qualifier after completing the eight-kilometer course in 26
minutes, 32.4 seconds, followed by Gomes in 16th place with
a time of 26:39.1. Both received All-New England recognition
for placing among the top 35 finishers.
Jasud and Gomes were among the 56 individual qualifiers
announced yesterday for this coming Saturday’s NCAA Division
III National Championship race hosted by Hanover College in
Hanover, Indiana. This is the first time in the history of
the USM men’s cross country program that more than one
competitor has qualified for the NCAA national championship
race. The past two years, former standout Curtis Wheeler
represented the Huskies at the national championship race.
The only other individual to qualify was Joey Luchini during
his freshman season in 1997.
