GORHAM, Maine -- For the second straight week,
University of
Southern Maine senior Gabrielle “Gabby” Cyr (Fort Kent, Maine)
has been named the
Little East Conference women’s cross country Runner of the Week
following her outstanding performance this past Saturday at
the
University of Massachusetts
- Dartmouth Invitational. Jonathan Harper, commissioner
of the
Little East, announced the weekly awards Monday
afternoon.
Cyr led all
Little East competitors across the finish line at the
UMD Invitational, placing sixth among the 310 runners with a
time of 18 minutes, 39 seconds. Her time was 1:15 faster
than her 2007 run, and she improved 55 places in the
finishing order.
At the season-opening
University of New
England Invitational on September 13, Cyr won that race despite
going off course around the two-mile mark and having to
overtake five runners in the final mile of the 5,000-meter
race.
The Huskies finished 15th among the 41 teams competing with
478 points. MIT
took the team title with 67 points, followed by
Amherst College
(88),
Brandeis University (130),
Colby College
(132) and
Springfield College (153).
Melissa Donais, an unattached runner, was the individual
winner with a time of 18:03.
After an off week, the Huskies will return to action on
October 4 when they travel to
Gordon College (Wenham, Mass.) for the Pop Crowell
Invitational.
