USM Has Strong Day at LEC-Alliance Championships

Women's College Cross Country

November 2, 2008

WESTFIELD, Mass. -- Senior Gabrielle “Gabby” Cyr (Fort Kent, Maine) finished fourth overall to highlight the University of Southern Maine women’s cross country team’s efforts at the 2008 New England Alliance and Little East Conference Championships run Saturday at Stanley Park in Westfield, Mass.

The Huskies finished third among the 12 teams competing in the New England Alliance Championship, and second among six teams in the Little East scoring. The New England Alliance race includes schools from the Little East Conference (LEC) and the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference (MASCAC). Each conference also scores a conference champion from the race.

Cyr covered the 5,000-meter course in 19 minutes, 6.98 seconds to place fourth in the Alliance race. Cyr’s finish was the best by a USM runner since Sara Marzouk came home second in 2005.

Sophomore Carly Dion (Biddeford, Maine) was the second USM runner to cross the line, finishing 11th with a time of 19:45.37. Junior captain Sarah Myrick (Weybridge, Vt./Middlebury Union) was just strides behind in 12th place in a time of 19:48.63. Cyr, Dion and Myrick each earned All-Alliance honors (top 20). Cyr was the lone USM runner to take home All-LEC accolades (top seven).

Rounding out USM’s five scoring runners were freshman Jillian Doyle (North Conway, N.H./Kennett) who finished 32nd overall in 21:21.15, and sophomore Alexandra Raynor (Lamoine, Maine/Mount Desert Island) in 33rd place with a time of 21:23.20.

Keene State swept the Alliance and Little East titles. The Owls took the Alliance crown outdistancing host Westfield State College, 25-61. USM was third with 84 points, followed by Bridgewater State College with 134 points and the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth with 141 points. The Owls took the LEC title with 18 points, followed by USM with 53.

The Huskies will take next weekend off before concluding their 2008 season at the NCAA New England Regional Championships at Mount Greylock HS in Williamstown, Mass., on November 15.
