GORHAM, Maine --
University of Southern Maine women’s soccer head coach
Lisa Petruccelli announced recently that senior
defender Shannon Martin (Gorham, Maine) had been
selected as the team’s captain for the 2008 season.
A three-year starter, Martin is expected to play a major
role on the Huskies’ back line this season. She is among the
nine returnees from last year’s side that finished 7-11-0
overall and
3-4-0 in
Little East Conference play.
“Shannon was selected unanimously by the players and coaches
to serve as the team’s captain. She leads by example in all
aspects - playing, practicing and in the classroom. She is a
tremendous person who understands the value and importance
of every member to the team which makes her an outstanding
leader,” commented Petruccelli, now in her third season at
USM.
Coming into the 2008 season, Martin had appeared in 46
matches, including making 35 starts. She had scored one goal
and been credited with two assists.
The Huskies opened their 2008 schedule with a
10-0 win
over
SUNY Maritime College at home last Saturday (August 30).
Martin tallied her second career goal in the victory.
Martin and her mates face four straight road matches at
Gordon
College on September 6, at the
University of New England on September 10, at
Maine Maritime Academy on September 14 and at the
University of Maine at Farmington on September 16 before
returning home to face Keene State College in their
Little East Conference opener on September 20.
The Huskies close out the month of September entertaining
Bowdoin College on September 23, traveling to Boston to
play the
University of Massachusetts Boston on September 27, and
hosting
Salem State College on September 30.
The Huskies have eight matches on the docket in the month of
October, including five at home. They open the month with
home matches against
Plymouth State University on October 4 and
Bates College on October 7. The Huskies will face
conference rival, the
University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, on the road on
October 11, then return home to play
Colby College on October 15 and
Eastern Connecticut State University on October 18.
Framingham State College and nationally-ranked
Western Connecticut State University are travel
destinations on October 21 and October 25 respectively. The
Huskies play their regular season home finale on October 29
against
St. Joseph’s College.
USM closes the regular season on November 1 with a road
match at
Rhode Island College. The
Little East Conference playoffs begin November 4 with
two first round playoff matches (#6 at #3 and #5 at #4). The
semifinal matches will be played November 6, and the
championship game will take place November 8 at the site of
the highest remaining seed.
