Southern Maine Defeats Colby in OT, 2-1

Women's College Soccer

October 15, 2008

GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Heidi DeHaan (Lewiston, Maine/St. Dominic) scored her second goal of the match 7:30 into sudden death overtime to give the University of Southern Maine a 2-1 victory over Colby College Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference women’s soccer match at the USM Soccer Field.

The victory snapped a seven-match winless streak (0-6-1) for the Huskies, and improved their overall record to 4-7-1. The win was the first for the Huskies over the Mules since beating them 2-1 in overtime on 2002. The Mules lost their fourth straight match to slip to 4-5-0.

DeHaan collected a cross from senior Shannon Martin (Gorham, Maine) deep in the left side of the penalty area and knocked a shot that grazed the near post and settled into the far side of the goal for the game winner.

Southern Maine got on the board first when DeHaan tallied her first goal in the 30th minute. DeHaan took a crossing pass from senior Caitlin Brown (Camden, Maine/Camden Hills) and deposited an eight-yard shot into the net.

Colby got the equalizer in the 38th minute when junior Hannah Holbrook (Acton, Mass.) hit a 25-yard shot that eluded USM junior goalkeeper Alison Bradley (Auckland, New Zealand).

The Mules had a big edge in shots in the opening half, out shooting the Huskies 12-2, but Bradley had six saves to keep her side level. Bradley finished the match with nine saves. Her Colby counterpart, sophomore Loni Pisani (Kanata Ontario), did not register a save. Colby finished the match with a 16-3 advantage in shots and with a 7-2 margin in corner kicks.

Southern Maine will host Eastern Connecticut State University on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) in a Little East Conference match. Colby hosts Connecticut College on Saturday (11:00 a.m.) for a NESCAC match.
