GORHAM, Maine -- Sophomore Heidi DeHaan (Lewiston, Maine/St.
Dominic) scored her second goal of the match 7:30 into
sudden death overtime to give the
University of
Southern Maine a 2-1 victory over
Colby College
Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference women’s soccer match
at the
USM Soccer Field.
The victory snapped a seven-match winless streak (0-6-1) for
the Huskies,
and improved their overall record to 4-7-1. The win was the
first for the
Huskies
over the
Mules since beating them 2-1 in overtime on 2002. The
Mules
lost their fourth straight match to slip to 4-5-0.
DeHaan collected a cross from
senior Shannon Martin (Gorham, Maine) deep in the left side
of the penalty area and knocked a shot that grazed the near
post and settled into the far side of the goal for the game
winner.
Southern Maine
got on the board first when DeHaan tallied her first goal in
the 30th minute. DeHaan took a crossing pass from senior
Caitlin Brown (Camden, Maine/Camden Hills) and deposited an
eight-yard shot into the net.
Colby
got the equalizer in the 38th minute when junior Hannah
Holbrook (Acton, Mass.) hit a 25-yard shot that eluded
USM junior goalkeeper Alison Bradley (Auckland, New Zealand).
The
Mules
had a big edge in shots in the opening half, out shooting
the Huskies
12-2, but Bradley had six saves to keep her side level.
Bradley finished the match with nine saves. Her
Colby
counterpart, sophomore Loni Pisani (Kanata Ontario), did not
register a save.
Colby
finished the match with a 16-3 advantage in shots and with a
7-2 margin in corner kicks.
Southern Maine
will host
Eastern
Connecticut State University on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) in
a
Little East Conference match.
Colby
hosts
Connecticut College on Saturday (11:00 a.m.) for a
NESCAC
match.
