USM Athletic Department Honors 128 Student-Athletes

College Athletics

November 10, 2008

GORHAM, Maine -- The Department of Athletics at the University of Southern Maine will honor 128 student-athletes this Sunday (November 16) at a banquet at Verrillo’s Restaurant in Portland, Maine, with the William B. Wise Scholar-Athlete Award.

During the 2007-08 academic year, the 128 individuals met the criteria to receive the Wise Scholar-Athlete Award. The criteria includes each individual compiling a minimum 3.00 cumulative grade point average for the fall and spring semesters, be a full-time student both semesters, and that they utilized a season of eligibility as a member of a varsity team or the cheering squad.

Three student-athletes will be recognized with their fourth Wise Award. Jessie Hobgood (North Berwick, Maine/Noble) a member of the women’s cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field; Tyler Ravlo (Yarmouth, Nova Scotia), a member of the men’s ice hockey team; and Forrest Tobie (Mt. Vernon, Maine/Maranacook), a member of the men’s cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field teams, will join a very select group of student-athletes who earned a Wise Award in each of their four years at USM.

A total of 20 student-athletes will be honored for the third time. They include Brandi Alton (Ripley, Maine/Dexter Regional; field hockey), Sarah Cannon (Sanford, Maine; indoor and outdoor track and field), Adam Haggerty (Hermon, Maine; men’s indoor and outdoor track and field), Christa Hutchinson (Falmouth, Mass.; women’s cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field), Shannon Kynoch (South Burlington, Vt.; women’s basketball and lacrosse), Ashley Kirkpatrick (Sanford, Maine; women’s tennis), Hattie Landry (Acton, Maine/Wells; women’s indoor and outdoor track and field), Ben Loss (Wilmette, Ill./Westminster; golf and men’s ice hockey), Dane Marshall (Yarmouth, Nova Scotia; men’s ice hockey) and Amy McNally (East Waterboro, Maine/Massabesic; women’s ice hockey and lacrosse).

Also Ryan Pike (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy; baseball), Emily Poliquin (Lisbon Falls, Maine/Lisbon; women’s cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field), Colin Reilly (Evergreen, Colo.; men’s soccer), Adam Ross (Spruce Head, Maine/Rockland; baseball), Dawn Ross (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester; women’s basketball), Jimmy Sawyer (Gorham, Maine; men’s cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field), Kyle Smith (Auburn, Maine; men’s ice hockey), Ryan Sullivan (Newton, Mass.; men’s ice hockey), and Curtis and Nick Wheeler (Derby, Vt./North Country Union; men’s cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field).

There also are 34 two-time winners, and 71 first-time recipients.
The award program, which was started in 1987-88, is named to honor William B. Wise, a retired USM administrator and friend of athletics. Wise, a graduate of the University of Maine, came to USM in 1966 as assistant dean of academic affairs and director of the evening college. In the ensuing years, he served USM as acting dean of the College of Education, assistant to the vice president for academic affairs, executive assistant to the president, and executive assistant to the vice president for student affairs.
